Goldenpaw Speaks
I woke early that day, at dawn. Sandclaw, my mentor, was not awake yet, but by sniffing the air, I could tell that Crowpaw was already out and about. Sniffing again, I noticed that Maplepaw, also, was out. But I was only interested in Crowpaw. So I tracked her down deep into the forest, following her scent trail and hunting on the way, and discovered that it had crossed paths with another cat. Lightningpaw!
[/b][/size] I thought in astonishment. I had not scented him until now. As I continued to follow the trail of two cats' scents, I was afraid of what I might find. Suddenly, I heard a purr, and realized exactly how close I was. "That's the spot - no, not there!" Crowpaw giggled and I heard paws hit the ground with a thump. "Are you sure?" That was Lightningpaw's voice. He sounded amused. "You know I'm ticklish there!" Crowpaw protested. "How about... here?" "No!" Crowpaw gasped, and this time I heard leaves flying all over the place when paws thumped on the ground. I wondered whether to leap forward and confront them or to back away quietly and pretend the entire scene had never happened. But I decided on neither. Instead, I padded forward and mewed, "Good morning, Crowpaw! Good morning, Lightningpaw! I've already caught loads of prey. How about you two?" Crowpaw looked thoroughly embarrassed, but Lightningpaw just looked bewildered. "How did you know we were here?" He asked, his eyes glowing with admiration. I heard a few frustrated mutters from Crowpaw, and wondered why, but did not ponder. "Followed your scent," I replied brightly, flicking my tail impatiently. Crowpaw wasn't the only cat I was allowed to like, and not Lightningpaw's, either! I wasn't sure if Crowpaw was jealous of her best friend or her crush, but she should stop being so hot-tempered. "I caught a thrush on the way," Lightningpaw boasted, his chin held high and his eyes shining with pride. "I caught a squirrel and two starlings," I pointed out, doing my best to hide my amusement at his egotism. When I saw Lightningpaw's tail droop, I added quickly, "But you can take the squirrel." Lightningpaw's eyes shone and his tail shot straight up in the air. "Thanks, Goldenpaw!" he purred. Crowpaw stepped forward suddenly, and declared, "I caught a squirrel, two voles, a mouse, and a rabbit!" "That's amazing!" I gasped. "How long did it take you?" "I started when the sun first started rising," Crowpaw told her. "So, not a bird catcher, I suppose?" Lightningpaw teased. "Why don't you show me exactly how good a bird catcher you are?" Crowpaw challenged. Without waiting for a reply, she raced up a tree and leaped so high and so far that Lightningpaw was panting trying to stay at least two fox-lengthes. "I'll trap her," I called, racing alongside Lightningpaw. I sped up so that I got ahead of Crowpaw. "Oh no! It's a crow!" I cried jokingly. "Attack!" I leapt at the tree and climbed as fast as possible, but Crowpaw had gotten far ahead by then. I managed to catch up and raced right behind Crowpaw until the apprentice leapt again and Goldenpaw could race under her. I just needed to make sure that Crowpaw didn't still land in front or worse, fall directly on top of me. Luckily, Crowpaw landed a few fox-lengths behind me, and I instantly whirled around, snarling. Crowpaw imitated the alarm call of a crow and turned fast before racing away, with me at her heels. Crowpaw continued to imitate this noise until Lightningpaw suddenly appeared and dealt a swift killing blow, claws sheathed so that it didn't injure Crowpaw. She pretended to die, letting herself fall to the ground, and completely unaware of the gap between the trees that lay under her shadows. "Help!" Crowpaw gasped, clawing frantically at the air. I jumped off the tree, sending leaves flying everywhere, and raced underneathe Crowpaw without thinking about it. Before I knew it, Crowpaw landed on top of her and quickly scrambled off. I, however relieved I was to have broken Crowpaw's fall, was hurting everywhere. I tried to get up, pushing myself up with my paws, but failed, falling back down immediately. "Get... Stripedpelt... and... Hawkflight!" I rasped urgently, my breath coming in slow, painful gasps.[glow=blue,2,300]Crowpaw[/glow]
