Chapter 20
The night drew to a close, but she couldn’t stay in her nest any longer. No one challenged her as she walked to the center of the clans’ territories. Monsters weren’t a problem for her. Their lights glared down the thunderpath long before they were close enough to be a threat. When she reached the great oaks, she climbed up the closest one. Her belly was swollen, but she managed. It was getting soon for them to be born. Thoughts of where she should build her nest came to mind but she shook this thought from her head. What was she thinking? One of the deadliest battles the clans had ever known was about to happen and she couldn’t be a part of it. Again she tried to force her visions, but it still ended the same. Tigerstar was dead, just below where she stood, and the clans scattered in and outside of clan territory. All would fall under the rule of Scourge. Falling asleep, she willed herself to be in StarClan. Blackness was replaced by a dark forest. Every mousetail of space felt cold and dank of misery. A she-cat Moon knew well stepped out of the shadows. “If it isn’t my old apprentice,” scoffed Mapleshade. “My we’ve been an adventurous kittypet. Never expected this from you, Moon.” Moon’s eyes narrowed into slits. “It’s Abyss to you.” “A change of name will not make a difference to me, kittypet.” Moon rolled onto her side as if in pain. “Ouch, that one hurt. What else you’ve got?” “Filth. To think that one of your kind is about to become a clan leader. Thunderclan was once my own, but I’m grateful that I am not alive to see its disgrace. Thank the darkness, Tigerstar will put an end to all this impure blood.” Moon meowed with laughter. “Let me guess. He’ll draw in Riverclan, weaken another clan because he is too much of a coward to face two fully fit clans at once. Then I suppose he’ll show up with Scourge to demand compliance to his reign over the forest from the other two clans. He’ll then unite the clans against Scourge and drive them out of the forest. Am I getting close to the prey?” Mapleshade’s eyes had widened slightly but then narrowed into slits. “Ah, I’ve pounced and caught it. Pathetic.” “My apprentice will defeat Scourge,” spat another voice. Moon turned and saw Thistleclaw striding up to them. “How’d you end up here?” Thistleclaw’s fur spiked out. “None of your business, kittypet.” “Honestly, you clan cats really have no imaginations. And that’s pretty rich considering that your precious apprentice is about to be taken out by one. He’s so caught up in his own self importance that he doesn’t realize what an enemy he has created.” Thistleclaw sneered at her. “Your brother will be killed before he ever reaches the Moonstone.” “Tigerstar’s pride won’t allow that,” said Moon evenly. For some reason she enjoyed fluffing out these cats fur. “It was too easy to get him to forget those plans. You should’ve done better to teach him not to gloat over the catch until it’s caught.” Moon didn’t hear his reply as her eyes slowly opened into the living world. Relief flooded through her. She hadn’t been inside the Dark Forest for a long time and it sent chills down her spine. More than ever she could feel the misery of the cats there and their hatred. While she hadn’t yet admitted it, that place scared her more than Bloodclan. Two cats passed beneath her. One was a gray she-cat with a limp. The other was one she hadn’t laid eyes on since she was a kit. Together they padded towards the moor unaware of the eyes that gazed hungrily on them. Not until they were gone from her sight did she climb back down. She found a dead shrew eating it in rapid gulps. It wasn’t fresh kill, but then she’d eaten worse in the town. Everyone there did. Then the real question formed in her mind. Where did her loyalties lay? They were certainly not to Bloodclan or the Dark Forest, but neither did they belong to the Starclan or the cats in the town. So where did that leave her? Her own personal scores against Bloodclan were meaningless. Yes, Bloodclan took away her best friend. She’d been able to confirm that Zain was killed by his own littermate. That brother was killed at the fangs of another member of Bloodclan. Shame had hit her hard when she realized just how upset she was that it wasn’t by her claws. Revenge just brought about more revenge in a never ending flow of blood. Gazing into a pool of water she took her reflection in deep. What she saw would’ve frightened her a few seasons back, but now she accepted it. Her face was in a constant scowl, fur spiked out giving her a menacing look. The wound on her shoulder wasn’t the most impressive scar she survived, that one came from Mapleshade and she wore it with pride. This was the cat she had become. She had been able to save many lives as Abyss, much more than she’d be able to as Moon. For this reason she envied Fireheart. No one would ever look at him as a treacherous murderer. He would always walk in the sunlight, while she walked in darkness. Her claws slammed into the pool scattering water onto the ground. Bloodclan had to go, she knew this. But at what cost? Already she lost a kit to the cause. While Lightning lived, she was no longer the cat he knew. She had stayed away so no one would learn of her weaknesses. Her own life was meaningless, but the life of her kit and friends were everything. That was why after all of this was over there could be no place for her as Moon. She see her kits safely into the care of the barn and leave the forest territories for good. It wasn’t fair to any of her kits to have them follow. “Abyss!” Fang brought her attention back to the present. “Did you forget Scourge was coming today?” The tom seemed a bit frightened. But then every cat held a type of reverence for the blood thirsty leader. The narrowing of her eyes was enough of an answer for him. “Just get on with it,” she hissed at Fang. Fang nodded quickly and left the camp to watch for Scouge’s coming. Some of the clan cats took notice of Fang’s cowardice before her, but quickly went about their duties when she turned her eyes on them. Even Blackfoot and Russetfur kept a wary distance from her. As she scanned the camp she noticed three cats in particular that were missing. One was the leader himself and the second the clan’s Medicine Cats. Exhaustion kept her curiosity in check. Slowly she walked back to the den set apart for her and the others and curled up in her nest. This time when she fell asleep she found herself in Starclan. She spent a few minutes searching the newleaf space, but only ran into a few cats, but not the one she wanted. “Great, the first time I actually need to talk with him and he’s nowhere to be found,” she growled. “Sagewhisker!” “Keep your voice down,” hissed a she-cat. “What do you want anyway?” “I would think my shout would’ve told you as much,” she snapped. If she had any patience for cats before, it was gone now that she was expecting kits. “I need to talk with him now.” The young cat looked at her for a moment. “You shouldn’t be here you know.” She rolled her eyes. “Not my fault I keep dreaming about this place. If I shouldn’t be here, then how is it possible for me to come?” “Well everyone is getting ready for the new leader. He’ll be coming to us tonight.” She wasn’t going to get any help here. Pushing her way past some cats she searched for her quarry. There were snatches of conversation about kittypets and from others the cat of prophecy. She didn’t care what they called her brother as long as she could save him. Finally she spotted him. Frustration welled within her as she made her way towards him. “Sagewhisker,” she hissed. The former Shadowclan medicine cat turned to her with astonished eyes. “This is not the time.” “You have to hear me about this. I’m not sure when the next time I can speak with you.” Sagewhisker looked at the others, some of which were annoyed or angry about her presence. He jerked his head to head towards an empty patch of space. Agitated he curled his tail around his paws. “What?” She stared into his eyes. “My visions haven’t changed. Tigerstar is still dead and the threat he brings to them destroys the forest. The clans will divide and scatter.” The old tom sighed. “Tigerstar has a plan to deal with the problem.” Her fur stood on end, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “And how is his record for settling with problems? He is the leader of Shadowclan, not Thunderclan. It’s…” “Fireheart and Cinderpelt are almost to Highstones,” announced one excited tom. Sagewhisker turned back to her. “I must join the others to prepare for his arrival. I will speak with you again soon.” With that the tom left her on the edge of StarClan. “You don’t understand,” she whispered. “There will be nothing left.” Looking below she stared at the clan’s territories. It was nothing more than a barren wasteland. She had been able to change her visions before, why not now? There was something missing, something that she could do to stop this. If she didn’t the clans would end.

As Fireheart received his final life at the Moonstone, a great evil entered the forest. Moon awoke from her nightmare of a great hill of bones with blood oozing through and engulfing the forest. It was a prophecy. Scourge had come to the forest. She emerged from her den just as Jaws ran into camp to tell her he was coming. Immediately she alerted Tigerstar and he busied about preparing his camp. The queens herded their kits into the nursery so not to get underpaw. Warriors lined the entrance to the camp as the tiny black cat padded through with a small guard. Tigerstar and Blackfoot greeted Scourge formally with all the pomp she expected. Her eyes passed over the clan cats. Most of their eyes rested on Bone being the largest cat among the new arrivals. When Scourge addressed Scourge some held back laughter about his size. The first and last mistake many had made. But Scourge wasn’t focused on them at the moment. Her group went and greeted some of the others. Moon, on the other hand, greeted Scourge as soon as it seemed appropriate. His icy blue eyes clawed her pelt as she felt his cold furry. And she knew why he was angry. In an instant the look was gone and she wondered if she’d imagined it. But she knew she hadn’t. Scourge instead went to Tigerstar’s den along with Blackfoot and Bone. While she wasn’t a part of the meeting, she knew they were discussing plans for the battle. Among Scourge’s guard was a long-haired white cat. Relief swept through her. However this was not the time to reunite with Tracker. It was enough to know she was no longer alone. A few days passed, but still Scourge said nothing to her. Instead she found out through Bone that she was confined to the camp. She was almost grateful for the order now that she needed more rest for her kits. That and she would miss all the excitement. A black-and-gray tabby tom had entered camp. In a few heartbeats she learned this was Darkstripe of Thunderclan. He was brought to Tigerstar who didn’t look happy at all to see his old clanmate. This was worth pausing over a afternoon meal. “Tigerstar, I can no longer be a part of a clan that is lead by a kittypet. I have left Thunderclan. You are the only leader in this forest worth following.” Russetfur and Blackfoot nodded in agreement. Tigerstar said nothing as he glared at Darkstripe. He had lost his spy in Thunderclan. Night took a piece of prey over to where she was sitting and began to eat. “If that cat left willingly than I’m a frog. More like banished.” “My thoughts exactly,” Moon replied. “So these kits of yours,” Night said changing the topic. “They’ve got to be coming soon.” Moon nodded. “Scourge isn’t happy. Watch yourself when you’re around him. There are few cats whose company I tolerate. Try to not get yourself killed.” The warning was well intentioned. Night and she had grown rather fond of each other as well as two she-cats in Bloodclan could get along. “Working on it. In my defense, I took a mate before Tigerstar showed up. We avoided each other after it became clear I was bound for the forest.” Night nodded. “I told Scourge as much. He thought you took Claw or Jaws as a mate and when they said they hadn’t he thought it was one of the forest cats.” “I’ve no interest in any tom in this clan.” She couldn’t say any clan. There was a tom in another clan she wanted as her mate, but he had told her he was loyal to his clan. He wouldn’t take a mate outside of Riverclan. Stonefur would never be hers. Giving herself a long luxurious stretch Night stood up. “Speaking of mates, there is mine. Excuse me.”
Everything was happening as she had foreseen. Leopardstar had joined her clan with Tigerstar’s to form Tigerclan. Those in camp said it was the name of one of the ancient clans, but Moon knew this name was another way for Tigerstar’s ego to show itself. This would be his clan, and no one else’s. Soon Tigerstar would lead his clanmates to the Riverclan camp giving their own camp to the growing number of Bloodclan cats. Moon watched as cat after cat walked into camp battle ready and hungry. Shadowclan was frightened, and they had a reason to be. Queens and their kits hid in the nursery. Nearby some elders and warriors watched them closely ready to protect them if necessary. When the full moon came, Tigerclan would announce their creation and offer the other clans to join. A few days after that, they would go to Four Trees to do battle if they refused. Her mind was made up, she would have to kill Scourge before that time could come. Casually she made her way to the Medicine Den. Runningnose and his apprentice, Littlecloud, were going through the stores. Ivy leaves sat on the ground ready to transport their precious herbs to RiverClan. “Leaving our camp to live at another’s. This hasn’t been done in the history of the clans.” Littlecloud looked at her and nudged his mentor. Neither cat looked very pleased to see her. “It could be worse,” Moon mewed. “You could be stuck with me.” The two cats weren’t sure if that was her attempt at a joke or not. In the end they both decided not to say anything. “Make sure to take all of it. This battle isn’t going to be pretty. I don’t imagine an opportunity to get more herbs after you leave.” Runningnose took a look at her growing belly. “Your leader’s going to have you fight?” “Would you be surprised if he ordered me to?” she asked. Shaking her head she added, “I’m being sent back to two-leg place soon. Hopefully these kits won’t decide to join me before I make it to a safe place.” “W-what? Without a Medicine Cat?” asked Littlecloud. Laughing she replied. “Plenty of queens have had their kits in the filth of the town without your kind’s help.” Littlecloud still was concerned. “Why not have them in the nursery?” Her heart warmed to the young Medicine Cat, but quickly suppressed it. She was already in danger with Scourge again because of her unborn kits. She couldn’t afford for him to think she’d grown soft because of it. “I’d be half mad to have them here. These cats can taste battle. There’ve already been a few fights. My kits would be killed as soon as I kitted with them in this frenzy. I’m surprised you haven’t moved your queens, kits, and elders yet.” “Abyss,” called Jaws. “Scourge wants you.” “Take everything,” she repeated before turning to follow Jaws. “Wait,” called Runningnose. When she looked back, she saw that he had a wad of herbs in his mouth. “Take these with you and eat them when you start to kit.” He prodded another herb. “This is borage, eat these afterwards. It’ll help your milk come.” “Why help me?” she asked, genuinely shocked. Runningnose looked her in the eyes, “There’s something about you that seems familiar, but I can’t place.” As she gazed into his eyes she knew that she had let her guard slip. These two cats could see something the others failed to notice. Whatever happened, she knew that she had to fight Bloodclan until her last breath. Not just for the sake of her family and friends, but also for the innocents.
At last all the clan cats were gone. As for Bloodclan, Scourge called all cats to him. Many cheered at their leaders words about the opportunity given them. Moon joined in calling loudly, but in her heart she felt sick. As soon as the meeting closed, she met with Scourge alone for the second time that day. Catch, a skinny gray she-cat, eyed her enviously. In her eyes, Abyss was a rival, but Moon had nothing to do with Scourge. But that wouldn’t protect her from the jealous she-cat. Scourge had settled himself in Tigerstar’s den and had her sit in front of him. This could be the opportunity she was waiting for. There were no guards and not many places to escape to. But she knew Scourge’s power in a fight and didn’t know if she’d win or not. “Tell me everything.” Moon nodded and launched into her report. Between her and the others they had gathered more information than Tigerstar imagined. They knew the names of the four clans and their leaders not to mention the size and strength of their fighting power. Their numbers alone would easily overwhelm that of the other clans. Too many had come. “This, pleases me Abyss. I hope you are still on friendly terms with Ryou,” Scourge said in his icy voice. “Judging from your size, I’d say you were at least friendly when you parted.” “Some toms desert their mates. I haven’t seen him since I left two-leg place.” Scourge glared into her eyes and she coward. “Because I wanted to prevent this from happening. On the very edge of my victory against the forest cats you have become useless to me.” “Let me be the one to kill Tigerstar,” said Moon. “I’ll prove that I am not useless.” “Tigerstar is mine.” An overwhelming hatred almost knocked her off her paws. A vision took over and she saw Scourge as a tiny kit being attacked by a younger version of Tigerstar. She felt the confusion he felt over why he had been attacked that later hardened into cold hatred. No matter how long it took, he would get revenge on that cat. There would be no cat to stand in his way, not even his own kin. Moon’s blood went cold. One cat had tried to calm his rage. It was a flame red ginger tom. For a heartbeat she thought it was Firestar, but then she heard them. “Kill me then.” “I won’t kill my own son,” replied the ginger tom. “Tiny, please, forget your hatred. Come back with me to your mother’s. She has been sick with worry for you.” Whatever cat Jake was trying to reach, it didn’t exist. There wasn’t even hesitation in Scourge’s eyes as he slashed his father’s throat. Silently he watched as Jake’s life blood flowed on the pavement. Moon shook her head out of the memory. No time must’ve past for Scourge hadn’t moved a mouselength. Did he know what she just saw? “As you wish, Scourge,” she said bowing her head. “Get out. I will decide what to do with you later.”

Oh, one thing. Sagewhisker is an ancient deputy of Shadowclan (not the Medicine Cat from the same clan that trained Yellowfang). Probably should clear that up.
I'm cleaning up the two chapters I wrote last night... will post as soon as I'm satisfied.

22 Fleeing the camp she went as far as she dared before collapsing in a hollowed out log. There she rejected her last meal. It couldn’t be true. It just couldn’t. “Moon.” Her head shot up and stared at Tracker. His eyes were full of concern as he walked up to her and began to lick her between the ears. “Tell me it’s not true,” she pleaded. “Tell me that Scourge isn’t my brother.” Tracker’s head cocked to one side. This was news to him. “No one knows who his parents are. Only that he had a pair of littermates that he banished from the town the moment they set foot on his territory. All the kits in that litter were gray and white. What makes you think you’re siblings?” Her anxiety hadn’t lessened. “Just now I saw into Scourge’s past. There was a flame-red ginger tom that he killed that said he was his father.” “Saw into his past? Moon what nonsense is this?” “It’s not nonsense,” she hissed. “These dreams have plagued me ever since I was dumped on that farm! If I’m on clan territory, I see visions of what is about to happen. But if I look into a cat’s eyes I see into their past.” Tracker stared at her as if she were half mad. “All right, we’re on clan territory. What do you see in mine?” He wanted proof of her curse. Hesitantly he looked into his eyes. His mother had been a beautiful white and gray she-cat. His only surviving littermate was a she-cat that resembled their mother. She was sick and their mother went to find food leaving them behind. Mother never came back. He had found her not far where she made their nest lying in her own blood. She had been killed for whatever piece of prey she was bringing back to them. When he had returned to his sister, she was sound asleep. Curling up next to her he fell asleep. In the morning he woke up, but she didn’t. An old reddish brown tom found him wandering around the town and offered him a place to stay. There he shared his food with him and taught him to fight. This tom introduced him to a friend and his son, Moon realized was Jake and Lynx. Moon pulled out of his memories and told him everything she’d seen. Tracker could only stare at her. “I’ve never told anyone,” he breathed. “Not even Lynx about my family.” “Believe me now?” she asked. Tracker nodded. Whatever he was feeling, he shook it away. “It’s not, impossible that he’s your brother. But you’re not like him Moon. You are a good cat, better than Lynx. I won’t deny I hate what he’s had you do.” “You’re not responsible for me, Tracker.” The white tom stared at her. “I may not be your mate. But your sister was. And I loved her more than my own life. I haven’t seen Princess since she told me she was expecting our kits. I couldn’t risk her getting hurt. I fight Bloodclan so she won’t ever hear their name.” “But your son will hear of their name. Princess gave your eldest kit to be raised by his uncle in Thunderclan. That clan is the most hated by Tigerstar.” His fur fluffed out in fear, “The dogs?” She shook her head. “He failed. Only two died that day. Your son, Cloudtail, survived.” Visible relief spread over Tracker’s face. “I’d never be able to face his mother if something happened to him. We’ll have to come up with a plan. I think Scourge intends to send you away. It would be the perfect opportunity to get you out of Bloodclan.” “Forget it, Tracker. Too much is at stake here.” Movement outside of the trunk startled the two of them. “It’s Night,” said Moon. “We can’t be seen together.” “Lynx has to know about all of this. I will see you as soon as I can.” With that he gave her a swift lick on the ear. Night hissed for her a tone of urgency in her voice. “Abyss! Abyss where are you?” Moon stepped out of tree truck. “Here.” Her friend rushed over to her. “You can’t leave camp like that. Claw noticed you left and is going to report you to Scourge. He’ll turn you into a hunt if he thinks you’re deserting him.” “All right. Let’s get back.”
The next day, Scourge sat with Bone, Claw, Fang, Night, and herself in a circle. Each of them went over everything they learned again to make sure they weren’t forgetting anything of importance. Once she told him everything, she would no longer be of use to him. Moon dared to ask a question. “Have you decided where you will hold audience?” When he didn’t say anything she added, “I might suggest Four Trees. It’s the center of the forest territories and is sure to be a method of keeping the wounds fresh for the remaining forest cats.” Night purred with laughter. “Oh Abyss you are heartless. I hope your kits are like you.” Don’t try too hard. He’ll notice. Moon thought. Night was already sticking her neck out far enough for her. “Four Trees is the gathering place for the clans,” said Moon with an edge of amusement. She still needed to play a part. “Every full moon the clans gather there for a single night of peace. It’s the center of their territories. Out of what I’ve seen, it is the most impressive.” Fang nodded. “I agree with her. The way those cats talk about it, you’d think that the greatest cats to walk the forest watched over them from there.” “These clan cats are insane,” added Claw. “They think a bunch of dead cats rule the forest. But soon they’ll know different.” Some laughed, but Scourge remained silent and the others got quiet again. When all eyes were on him again he spoke. “Yes, they will soon learn. Have you missed anything?” The others looked at each other, but said nothing. But there was one piece of information that she had held back on. “I’ve saved the best for last, Scourge.” His icy eyes turned to her encouraging her to go on. “I wasn’t able to speak to this to the others,” she said looking at Night. “But Tigerstar thinks to betray you as soon as he has the strength of all four clans behind him.” Claw and Jaws exchanged glances. They wouldn’t have heard about this. They didn’t walk the same paths she did by night. “He is not one to share power,” she continued. “We all saw one of his friends come to camp. He had been Tigerstar’s spy in another clan. I saw murder in his eyes. He’d turn on anyone that opposes him. I’m willing to bet he’d turn on his own kits.” “Kits?” Scourge said with interest. “Does he have kits?” “Two,” she said without hesitation. “Both belonging to his former clan. But he has little, if any, affection for them. The fact that they’re his kits makes him believe that they will be the strongest in the forest some day. He thinks himself better than any cat including those that live in this, StarClan.” She purred with laughter despite how much it sickened her. Claw, Jaws, and Night looked unsure of her. “He’s probably the best fighter the clans have got. Kill him and him alone and you’ll see just how fast forest cats can scatter.” Was she imagining it or was there a glint of pleasure behind Scourge’s eyes? But she wasn’t about to breathe a sigh of relief yet. Scourge nodded slowly. “Let’s have some entertainment,” said Scourge. “You will sit with me, Abyss. The rest of you can go.” Cats formed a circle around camp. One of the strongest fighters in the town walked to the center challenging another cat. Scourge had settled himself on a dead branch that Tigerstar used to address the clans. Moon sat next to him, uncomfortable, but she was in no position to complain. The fight began. Others urged the fighters on as they fought to the death. After it was over another challenge was issued. More blood. Live pray was brought into camp, their screams filling the air as they were let go and captured again and eventually killed without mercy. Moon was just happy they hadn’t brought any prisoners with them. “So you think that if I were to kill his kits, it would not have the desired effect?” Moon kept her eyes on the fight. “No. This attack he’s planned with the dogs will destroy their birth clan. We’ve only heard plans for him to save his kits, but not the mother. Kits are always more attached to the mother. They’ll hate them for it.” They sat in silence except for the caterwauls of the battle below them. “Anything more you wish to say?” If she was going to be killed, she would do what she could for the clans. Her life didn’t matter. “The clans haven’t had the pleasure to know of your greatness as I have. They will need, time, to think of what you taking over the forest will mean for them and their kin.” Scourge’s eyes narrowed into slits. “Are you suggesting that I be merciful to these clan cats?” “Never,” she hissed. “I want these cats to know fear. When Tigerstar is dead they will learn that fear. A few days will throw them into a gulf of despair. At least that is my opinion.” “Which has served me well,” said Scourge. “I will, think about this. But for now, you will leave. Ryou is still in town. I’m sure he is pretty anxious about his kits.” “I’m not sure he knows. I didn’t until I was in the forest for a moon. How close do you want me to keep him?” “Close. Use your charm to keep him devoted to you and your kits.” And then she knew. He wasn’t planning on killing her, he was going to kill her kits! “Tracker, Night!” The white tom and black queen moved from the crowed and bowed before him. “Take Abyss back into town.” Catch’s eyes glinted with delight. This order had been given to some that would later kill those they escorted. “She’s not to be harmed,” Scourge added. “For now.” Tracker and Night nodded. Moon jumped down and bowed her head to Scourge. “If the kits come before the battle, may I return?” “We’ll see.” It was a dismissal. Her friends flanked her as they walked out of camp. Catch was clearly not happy and snarled as she walked past. Moon didn’t pass up the opportunity to sneer at her. Moon’s standing in Bloodclan was still far above hers. And Moon wasn’t even loyal.

Who's to say Scourge let her go? She just left camp and isn't safe yet. You might just see that part come back (with some changes)

Tracker kept far behind them as they padded through the forest. Night kept glancing nervously behind her expecting something. Both of them were expecting to be hunted and Tracker and Night suspected the other of being the hunter. “I trust Tracker with my life,” whispered Moon. Night glanced suspiciously at him for another moment. “I thought Scourge was going to order you killed for sure.” “Don’t ever stick up for me again,” hissed Moon. “You came close to getting yourself killed.” “Scourge can go to the vet for all I care,” Night said proudly with her tail high. “We’ll have our own clan soon enough. Ryou wanted me to learn the forest cat’s code. He thought there might be something to it.” Moon paused briefly. “Are you serious?” “Are you sure you know my brother? You took him as a mate didn’t you?” “Don’t worry, these are his kits.” She reflected back on the night she returned to Bloodclan. Scourge had seen right through the lie she told Bone. Before he ordered her killed, Ryou had stepped in. His lie was far more convincing. She had been gone for so long having his kits. Unable to see another way out, Moon went along with the lie. She added that she left the kits with a nursing queen and Brick would see to their upbringing as Bloodclan cats. By the end of the cold season, Scourge would have two strong fighters. Scourge had eaten up the lie. Ryou enforced a part of the town for Scourge. But Moon noticed that he wasn’t as harsh as some of the others. He continued to show affection for her, although she had no idea why let alone the reason he had stood up for her. All the while, Moon tried to get her position back in the clan. Eventually the leader of Bloodclan believed in her devotion again. That meeting had ruffled her fur only a little. “I notice you don’t spend that much time with your mate.” “That affair is over,” said Moon. Scourge nodded as if he suspected as much. “Some troubling things have reached my ears about him. I want to know if they are true. I want you to keep an eye on him for me. I want you in his confidence.” Cocking her head she replied, “You mean take him as my mate again?” “And no other until I learn the truth.” The next day she left Scourge’s side to be with Ryou. It would be an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. If Ryou was betraying Scourge then he might become an ally for Lynx. Day by day she learned everything about him. They’d walk the territory together, get into the same fights, even share a few meals. All the time she wanted to ask why he’d save her. One time Night had taken her out alone. She told her how much happier her brother seemed to be around her. That was where their friendship had started. Night had always been too kind for Bloodclan. Not long before Tigerstar came to camp, Ryou had taken her outside of town down by a river. “Look up.” Moon did as he told her and saw thousands of stars. She had forgotten how beautiful they were as she stared into the infinite starlight. Ryou looked up as well. “There. That is our proof that there is more out there than this filthy town. We could walk under those stars for the rest of our lives and never find where they end.” She rubbed her muzzle against his, unsure what her emotions were. His tail wrapped around hers and she found herself purring. “When the time is right, we’ll leave this place. Start our own clan. One that we can be proud of.” “What are you saying?” Moon asked. Besides Brick, her brother, and his group she didn’t know of any cats that would dare defy Scourge. “I’m saying I hate Bloodclan and want nothing to do with them,” he replied. “Abyss, please say you’ll come with me. I promise I’ll take care of you.” It was in those words that she remembered her old friend, Zain. It was then she knew the strength of his emotions for her. This tom was unlike any she had ever met before. And with surprise she realized she loved him. “Moon. My name is Moon.” Ryou studied her for a moment. “Moon.” “I’ll come with you,” she purred. “But not yet. Something big is coming to Bloodclan. And I want to be around to see it.”
“You all right?” Night asked shaking Moon from her memories. Yes, Ryou was the type to want to build a clan on a warrior code. “I’m fine.” Tracker caught up with them. His fur brushed against Moon’s supporting some of her weight. “We’re not being followed. Yet.” Moon breathed a sigh of relief and leaned even more on him. Night stared at the two of them. Moon knew that she felt a pang of jealously for her brother. Moon shook her head. “Tracker belongs to my sister.” “Oh,” she replied, letting her fur lie flat again. “Good.” Tracker stopped her. “We’re almost to the town. But we’re taking a rest. You’re asleep on your paws.” He nudged her to a set of bushes that would easily protect them. As soon as he was satisfied she was comfortable he guarded them a little ways away. Night curled up beside Moon, grooming her fur. Her slow rhythm lulled Moon into sleep. A white tom padded over to her. One look around her and she knew she was in StarClan. “Sagewhisker.” “You must leave. Lies have been told and you are in danger.” Moon’s eyes narrowed into slits. “Catch. How far behind?” Sagewhisker stared into her eyes. “Not far. Five have come. Now run.” Her claws scraped the ground as she woke up. “What’s wrong?” asked Night. “We’re being followed. Tracker!” The white tom was on them in a moment. “What?” “He waited longer to make it interesting. We’ve got five on our tail.” The white tom stared at her for a moment questioning how she knew, but dismissed it. He knew about her visions. Barring his teeth he hissed. “Let’s go. We’ll take the shortest route to the barn. With any luck, your littermate is being reckless along our path.” Night followed them without question keeping close to them. “My brother will never forgive me if something happens to you.” “Why?” Tracker asked. Moon heaved between words. “Because these are his kits. Explain later.” The pace was too much and she sat down for a brief moment to catch her breath. Tracker and Night moved to either side of her to support her weight. “Come on,” said Tracker. “They’re close. I can scent them over the stench of this road.” Night turned around. “Too late.” Together the two spun around unsheathing their claws. “Moon go,” Tracker shouted. “I’m not leaving you.” “You’re no good to us here. Move,” shouted Night. She knew she couldn’t fight, not with the weight of the kits. Reluctantly she turned and fled. Caterwauls issued a challenge behind her but she kept going. But she wouldn’t be fast enough. Two shadows moved ahead of her on either side trapping her. Her claws dug into the ground. She wasn’t going to give up without a fight. “Come out and face me! Or is a queen close to kitting too much of a challenge?” Claw was the first to step out of the shadows followed by Jaws. “Nothing personal, Abyss,” said Claw casually. Her eyes narrowed into slits. “So long as you know.” The two toms ran forward. Moon clumsily jumped to the side, slashing her claws across Jaws’ flank as he passed. Back arched she lifted the hair along her spine fluffing out her tail. Again she faced her two attackers. “Defiant to the end,” mused Claw. “I’m going to enjoy this.” He raised his claws and slashed for her shoulder. He wanted this to be slow and painful for his own sick pleasure. Before Claw could strike a massive black tom slammed into his side throwing him in to a bramble patch. “Get away from her filth!” Jaws’ mouth gaped open as he took in the size of the new attacker. “Ryou.” “Take one more pawstep towards my mate and you’ll regret it.” Jaws took a step backwards, but then his face hardened. “Scourge’s orders.” Claw stood back up and barred his teeth in defiance. Ryou twitched his tail before launching himself towards him. They were tangled in a mass of fur. Each grabbed the other’s neck and began scratching furiously. Moon was almost knocked over by the flurry of blows. Ryou pushed Claw off of him and they stared at each other defiantly before springing at each other again. Jaws took the opportunity and charged after her. But she knew all of his moves. As he reared up to slam his claws down on her she backed out of the way. His claws sank into the earth and she leaped on top of him squishing him to the ground. His claws racked furiously trying to get her off, but her weight kept him in place. She grabbed his collar with her teeth and yanked exposing his neck underneath. Jaws slipped his head out and unbalanced her. “I’m not going to let a queen beat me,” he spat. Jaws lunged for her again and this time his claw met her shoulder. With a yowl of pain she backed away hissing her insolence. Fear gripped her. She was going to die. Jaws purred ready to sink his teeth into her throat. A bush blocked her from backing up any further. Quickly she turned to see if she could go under. The plant was bunched tight together. There would be no escape that way. A mass of red berries would mark the place where she died. “Deathberries!” As Jaws went for the kill bite she ducked down at the last moment. Instead of her fur, he got a mouthful of the poisonous fruit. His tongue wiped over his teeth to get rid of the taste. But it was too late for him. He had swallowed some of it. “How long are you going to keep this up?” he sighed. “You’re beaten.” She sat up staring at him. “No, you are.” Jaws snorted at her and lifted a paw. “W-what did you do?” Jaws fell to the ground, struggling for breath. His limbs thrashed about, but no relief would come. The other two broke off their fight to watch. Claw stared at her wide eyed in horror as Jaws stopped moving. With his attention diverted, Ryou sank his teeth into Claw’s throat. When the last of his life drained out, Ryou let go.
