Moon looked back as Sunpaw tucked her paws under her belly. Sunpaw was such a young cat to have such hatred in her. While Moon would never drive her away, she wondered if Sunpaw really wanted to leave Riverclan forever. But dealing with Bloodclan had to be first or there wouldn’t be a choice for the apprentice. Already Ryou, Lynx, and Lightning sat waiting for her. Lynx paced the clearing until he spotted her and sat down. “What’s this about sis?” She stared directly at her littermate. “Tomorrow at sunhigh, Scourge is going to meet the cats not under Tigerstar’s claws to convince them to join or die.” “You said that,” said Lynx. “What’s changed?” “Nothing. Except what’s really going to happen.” She looked at Lightning and then Ryou. None of the cats here knew about her gift. Only Starclan, Mistyfoot, and Tracker knew about it. But now wasn’t the time to tell them, not when it was so important to the survival of many cats. “Tigerstar is planning to betray Scourge. His arrogance that he’s the strongest cat in the forest is what’s going to get him killed tomorrow.” “He should’ve never made that deal,” said Ryou. “He has no idea what terror will be unleashed on his own cats as well as the others.” Lightning lashed his tail. “He lured a pack of dogs on his own family. “He doesn’t care what happens to others so long as he’s the one that wins in the end. The clans don’t stand a chance.” “The clans?” mewed Lynx. “You sound as if you’ll be sad that they’re gone. Don’t you remember that they abandoned you? That they are the ones that abandoned the town cats to the mercy of Scourge?” Lightning growled showing his teeth. The tension in the air was getting to everyone, but there was something else in the way that Lightning was behaving to Lynx. Had they fought? “Enough,” called Ryou. “Moon what are you getting at.” “I don’t recall anyone making you leader,” said Lynx. “You were just another kit for Scourge to order around while we were risking our necks.” “Say that again,” growled Ryou. Moon glared at all three of them, but they weren’t looking at her. This wasn’t going at all like she planned. This caused for a more direct approach. Lynx glared at him. “Scourge’s-” “Just so you know I plan to fight in the battle at Four Trees.” “-kit. WHAT?” Three pairs of eyes stared wide eyed at her and then the objections poured down. “You’ve four mouths to feed.” “You’re crazy.” “Not got your strength back.” “Too dangerous.” “And for what? To help those fleabags?” “What are you thinking?” Moon rolled her eyes. “Are you three done?” “No,” they said in unison. “Glad that’s settled,” she purred. “Think about it toms. We have an opportunity that we’ve never had before. Each clan has at least eighteen battle fit cats. That’s more than we could ever hope to convince to fight against Scourge. And they will fight. Right down to the last kit. We take out Bloodclan with their help.” “You really think these cats will accept our command?” asked Lynx. “Only a pawful of these cats know us enough to trust us.” Moon lashed her tail on the ground. “I have no intention of commanding them. Or even letting them know we’re helping them for that matter.” Lightning tilted his head to the side like he always did. “Then, what are you planning?” “Listen.”
Lynx and Moon explained to those that would fight their part of the plan. When they finished all she got was blank stares. “This is so crazy it just might work,” said Jump. “Lynx you’ve got one scary littermate,” said Jade. “But I’m in.” “Me too,” said a tom she didn’t recognize. “If there’s a chance for Scourge to be defeated, I want to be there.” “Sounds like we won’t be doing most of the work,” said Snaps a golden she-cat. “And that bothers me. It sounds too easy.” “The battle is the easy part, Snaps. It’s what happens after that I’m worried about,” said Acorn. “Most of you don’t remember what it was like before Scourge, but I do. Chaos, turf wars, fighting night and day. Scourge brought order to all of that.” “You say you want him to stay in power?” asked Jade. “I’m saying is it right for us to uproot everyone else’s life just because we’re the ones that think it should change? Where will cats be able to go when the pursuit of power puts them in more danger than if they stayed under the old ways?” “With us,” said Moon. “After this is all over we are taking as many cats that want to come with us and we’re leaving the town. I am leaving with Ryou and my kits as soon as they are strong enough and we’ll head towards the setting sun. There’s lots of land to choose that way.” “So you say,” said Acorn. “How do we know you’re not leading us to our deaths.” “You don’t,” said Callie. “But if you don’t want to trust her than you can stay here. It sounds exciting, so I’m going with them.” Acorn’s fur fluffed out. “Callie, you can’t be serious.” “Bloodclan is going down with or without you, Acorn,” said Jade. “We’re wasting time arguing about the particulars. Let’s move.” “Agreed,” said a few more cats. Lynx nodded expecting his cats to want to leap into action. “We leave at nightfall. Make sure you get your strength up before then.”
Ryou left that morning with all of his cats. By now Lynx and his cats would be in position. Now all she could do was wait. Sunhigh fast approached and she turned restlessly in her nest. If she was to see anything she needed to be able to walk among StarClan. Moon focused on her kits as they started another nap. The rhythm of their breathing soon put her at ease. When she opened her eyes again she saw Tracker. “An interesting plan you’ve got,” said the white tom. “Mind telling me why you don’t want the clans to know?” “Simple. The clans need to learn to rely on each other. Another danger is coming to the clans and if they are not able to unite here and now, the clans will be wiped out.” Tracker sighed. “And you would know. So are we going to StarClan?” “We?” Tracker purred. “You’ve got me curious. I want to see how this all turns out.” The two butted heads before heading to clan territory. As she expected, many of the cats were staring down at Four Trees where many cats were assembling. She watched as a fire-red tom address Scourge boldly. “Now that’s Jake’s son all right,” whispered Tracker. “Still hard to believe who else he fathered.” “Shh,” whispered Moon. “StarClan doesn’t know. Lynx doesn’t either.” Tracker said nothing but watched along with everyone else. And then it happened in less than a heartbeat. Tigerstar turned on Scourge. Moon watched as Scourge slashed the giant tom from neck to tail. Some of the cats stood frozen in shock. “Redtail. Runningwind. Swiftpaw,” Moon said in an even tone as one life after the other was lost. Several cats stared at her as she continued to list. “Brindleface. Bluestar. Stonefur. Gorsepaw. One life for all the cats that will be lost in this battle.” Moon closed her eyes remembering her vision of a bright enthusiastic kit that wandered into the forest. He was just like Rusty. Quickly she banished the thought. This cat was nothing like her littermate. But he was still her brother even if they did come from different mothers. “Tiny.” A blue gray she-cat stared at her. “That kit that wandered into my territory. It died?” Moon shook her head. “No. You’re looking at him. Even now Tigerstar doesn’t recognize the kit he almost killed all those season’s ago.” “It’s done,” said Sagewhisker. “Tigerstar will have no place among us. He doesn’t deserve it.” There was a look of desperation in his eyes as he looked at her. But she held her ground. All of the clans, including StarClan, had to believe her, her clan would have nothing to do with the coming battle. “Come on Tracker. Show’s over.”

Chapter 27
Some of the cats stared at them as they left. Moon kept her eyes forward and head held high as Tracker and she left StarClan territory. Running ahead, she found the nearest tree and scraped her claws against its trunk. Burring her muzzle on her paw, Moon screamed out her frustration. Tracker placed his tail on her shoulder. “I knew,” she whispered. “I knew he would die like that. But I didn’t even try to stop Scourge. I didn’t want to.” “Scourge gave them three days to flee,” said Tracker gently. “That wouldn’t have happened if you tried to interfere.” Moon shook her head. “This will still haunt me.” “Are you still planning to fight in the battle?” asked Tracker. “That was just to get their attention. Shadowclan believes me to be a strong supporter of Scourge. Some I know would enjoy a fight against me. I’ll interfere only if I have to.” “So where do we go from here?” Moon’s mind began to focus again. “Riverclan will fight in this battle and I have no doubts that every able bodied fighter will be asked to fight for the clans. We’ll start with training the clan apprentices. I’ll train them myself.” “Trust Sky and Lightning to that task. Those furballs knows more tricks than I ever did against Bloodclan.”
“Visitors,” Pounce called down through the entrance of her den. Pounce rubbed muzzles with her as she took Moon’s place guarding the kits. Moon joined Lightning over at the barn. There waiting for her were three toms, the Medicine Cats of Riverclan and Shadowclan. “A-Abyss?” Runningnose stammered. “Mudfur are you squirrel-brained?” Moon glanced at the sky wondering if Tracker saw that as if to say ‘I told you so’. “This is my mother, Moon,” announced Lightning ignoring Runningnose. “Anything you have to ask from any cat here goes through her.” Mudfur nodded and stepped forward. “I understand you have some Riverclan apprentices here. May we speak with them?” “I’m not sure if they want to talk to you. What is this about?” Moon replied evenly. “I’m not sure how much you know about Bloodclan,” stared Mudfur. “She’s one of them Mudfur,” hissed Runningnose. “Moon is no more Bloodclan than I am,” snarled Lightning. “We’ve rescued cats from two-leg place for seasons. Moon called herself Abyss to place herself on the inside.” “Really?” stammered Littlecloud impressed. Moon purred. “Won’t do you any good. I’m marked for death in Bloodclan. Although,” she started thoughtfully, “Being able to kill a few powerful cats days before I kitted should keep my reputation up.” “K-killed? Who?” “Claw and Jaws. I don’t know the others, but if it helps your sentiments it was quick. So that takes care of five cats for you.” “Will you fight with us?” asked Mudfur. She expected the question, but hesitated to answer. Here was a cat she respected, one who taught Lightning medicine that help heal many cats. Lightning watched her. “We asked Riverclan the same question seasons ago,” she said finally. “The only change now is that Bloodclan is now the clans’ problem. You already know what the result will be. If we fight and lose, then I’ve not just threatened but ruined any chance I have of getting a good spy in Bloodclan. If we fight and win, the clans will boast how they never needed us in the first place and drive us off as strays.” Mudfur bowed his head knowing what she said was true. Heaving a sigh she added, “You’re going to ask the apprentices aren’t you?” “We need all the cats we can get,” said Littlecloud. She turned to Lightning, “Where are the apprentices now?” “With Sky training,” he replied. “Send for them. They can give these cats their answer.” With a nod, Lightning called over to a young cat and he went running to their training area. “Mudfur!” In an instant, four rambunctious cats launched forward and flopped on their Medicine Cat. Question after question was hurled at him and Moon did her best not to purr in amusement. “Dew, where is Sunpaw?” Moon asked. “S-she didn’t want to come.” “Her choice,” Lightning said off-handedly. “Moon, a word.” “They’re too young to go against Bloodclan,” whispered Lightning once they were out of earshot. “I know,” she replied. “Younger cats than them will be fighting. The future of the clans depends on this battle.” “Then why don’t we tell them we are going to help them.” He looked at her more earnestly. “Lynx isn’t here. There’s nothing wrong about giving them hope.” His words stung her to the heart. “No Lightning. We can’t tell them about the others.” “Why?” “You have to trust me on this. I’ll explain latter.” Reedpaw padded up to them. “Can we go back?” “That’s up to you. But know that these cats you are going up against will not hesitate tot kill you or anyone. If you fight, it is to kill or at least seriously injure. So long as Scourge is alive, not many cats will run.” Reedpaw gave her a slow calculating nod. “Thank you for taking us in.” As the clan cats padded away Moon called out to them. “Mudfur. Those from your clans that don’t join the battle may come here.” “Thank you.”

Ch 28
Moon nosed her kits one more time before leaving her den. They were so precious to her, but it would be awhile before she would see them again. When she walked out Lightning and Pounce were twining tails and rubbing muzzles. Tender words were exchanged, but Moon pretended not to hear. Pounce broke away from her mate. There was no need to ask her to watch over her precious litter. The two she-cats touched noses before Pounce went into the den. “Let’s go,” said Moon. “Wait!” Sunpaw caught up with them. “Don’t leave me behind.” Lightning exchanged glances with Moon. “I thought you wanted to stay behind to protect the barn?” Sunpaw shook her head. “I want to fight.” Moon stared at her long and hard. Here was a cat that felt like every cat had abandoned her. She wouldn’t be one of them. “You can come,” said Moon. “If you swear to obey every order I give you no matter how foolish or cowardly it sounds.” Sunpaw nodded her head. Sunpaw looked around nervously at every bush that rustled as they headed deeper into Shadowclan territory. “Keep your fear scent down,” hissed Lightning. “We don’t know who’s going to find us first.” Moon tasted the air, “Ryou.” “Miss me?” asked her mate as he stepped out of the hedges. “Yes,” she replied as she rubbed her muzzle against his. Ryou turned and looked around. “Lynx and his cats are in position and so are mine.” “Good.” She looked at the horizon. “We’re running low on time. We’ve got to get to Four Trees before Scourge does.” “Take care will you?” asked Ryou. “Don’t be a hero.” “You to.” She turned to the other two. “Come on.” She lead a relentless pace. Scourge would want to be there early to study the field. He must know the clans planned on fighting. He wanted them to fight. And she would give him one. “That one looks good,” said Lightning studying the four oaks. “Good view from all sides and low hanging branches that we can climb to the other two.” Just as they scrambled up to the last branch, a pair of scouts entered the clearing. After a quick look around they returned to Bloodclan. Scourge and Bone entered first followed by row after row of town cats. Most had reinforced claws, collar, or both, or nothing at all. They sat in silence as Scourge’s tail began to twitch with anticipation. Both Moon and Scourge scented the clan cats at the same time. Scourge called to him and shortly after that Firestar and the clans joined him in the clearing. Her chest tightened as she watched Firestar face off against Scourge. Slowly she started picking out cats she knew. Some she would protect at all costs, others were targets. “ATTACK.” The clearing erupted in the sound of screeching cats. Moon’s nightmares were coming true. But she couldn’t afford to loose focus. “Lightning, find Scourge. Keep your eyes on him when you do. Sunpaw, see that gray she-cat there?” Sunpaw nodded. “Don’t let her out of your sight.” “Catch?” asked Lightning. “Why her?” Moon narrowed her eyes. “I don’t know. Just got a funny feeling about her.” Lynx darted into the clearing swiping the paws from under a red tom. Jump caught the two that tried to attack them when they realized that they were traitors. A group of Bloodclan cats gathered near the edge and advanced. “Moon, the Medicine Cats are over there!” shouted Lightning. Without thinking she hurled herself into the next tree. Skidding down the trunk she launched herself onto one of the unsuspecting cats. Knocking the wind out of the cat she landed on she unsheathed her claws scraping the sides of another. “Not a pawstep more,” she hissed. Two of the cats froze. “Abyss? You’re supposed to be dead!” “Not quite,” she spat. One ran and fled and his friend followed. The others only spent a moment before attacking her. With a caterwaul she slashed her claws against the muzzle of the first cat. Pain seared from her tail. Twisting around she clamped her jaws around a leg of the cat that bit her tail. “Traitor!” Moon hardly had time to react to the huge tom that thundered through the hedge. He dived for her throat, but she dodged out of the way. His claws tore through her old wound. Blood covered her shoulder and she collapsed from his weight. “NOT HER!” “Sunpaw, NO!” But her warning went unheeded. Sunpaw leapt on the tom bighting the back of his neck. The weight vanished from her as he focused his attentions on the young apprentice. Lightning was by Sunpaw’s side in a flash. “Lie still,” whispered a soft voice. “Mudfur?” “I thought you weren’t going to help us.” Despite her pain, Moon purred. “And miss the party?” “I need cobwebs!” Mudfur’s tongue rasped against her shoulder in rough even strokes. “You’re going to be all right.” “Wh-where’s Lightning and Sunpaw?” Moon rasped. “I’m here,” said Sunpaw with a weak voice. “Lightning joined the fight.” Moon turned her head to Mudfur. “Help her, not me.” “I’ve got Sunpaw,” said a gray she-cat as she limped over to the weakened cat. “Fernpaw bring me those cobwebs.” “Yes Cinderpelt,” said the young gray she-cat. The Medicine Cats worked in silence. “Moon! What in the stars were you thinking getting involved?” Lynx pushed his way over to her. His tongue rasped against her muzzle taking away from the sting on that side. “Is she going to be all right?” asked Lightning as he padded up. “The ‘she’ you’re referring to can speak for herself. I’ll be just fine. How we doing?” Lynx stopped his licking for a moment. “Bloodclan is winning. Jump and Chase are dead. Three more injured, but will be fine. They’ve retreated to Ryou’s area. I’m not sure about the others. Moon, this is foolish. We should get out now before every cat and Bloodclan marks us.” “No,” she snapped. “Scourge and Bone, where are they?” “Bone is dead,” Sunpaw said proudly. “Featherpaw and Stormpaw took him down with a few other apprentices.” Moon’s eyes bore into her brother’s. “We get Scourge and this will be over.” “There are still a lot of angry kitties out there,” said Lightning. Lynx’s ears pricked up. “Moon you mad crazy genius. Got to go. Move it Lightning.” “What?” Moon asked cocking her head to the side. But Lynx and Lightning were already gone. “What in StarClan was that about?” asked Mudfur. Moon stared out onto the field. “I have no idea.” “FIRESTAR IS DOWN”

Ch 29
“Scourge killed Firestar!” The air itself tightened around her chest. For a moment she couldn’t breathe. All the sounds around her muted and were replaced by her memories. “Because this cat is foretold to kill Fireheart,” said Mapleshade. “Do I kill my own brother?” Moon asked. “StarClan has been wrong before,” said Sagewhisker. “But you don’t believe that. You actually think I will fulfill the prophecy.” “That remains to be seen,” said Sagewhisker. Crying out she tried to block the memories. She was prophesied to kill her brother. She recalled all the opportunities she had to take down Scourge, but each time told her she wouldn’t succeed. Was that because she didn’t try? Was she responsible for this? “This battle needs to happen,” a voice told her. “Out of my way,” a cat cried in the living world. Moon shook off her visions that threatened to assail her again. Focusing her eyes she saw Cinderpelt trying to push her way through the Medicine Cats. “I have to get to Firestar!” “Cinderpelt, it’s too late,” said Littlecloud. “He has nine lives, he’ll wake up,” said Barkface. “Do you forget Tigerstar so soon?” she wailed. “How will his nine lives be any good to him if he’s too badly injured?” Cinderpelt was right. Slowly, Moon dragged herself to her feet. She had enough of resting. It was time for action. “Where’s Scourge? I’m ending this.” “Over by Great Rock,” said Runningnose. “Hold it where are you going?” “To do the stupidest thing I’ve ever done!” she shouted back. Dodging one cat after the other Moon hurried over to Scourge. He was finishing with a tawny she-cat. A friend of hers cried out an attacked, but he was killed just as quickly. Her muscles bunched beneath her. Pushing with her hind legs she leapt on Scourge’s back and pushed herself off of him as quickly as she landed. Shoulder burning, she turned to see Scourge’s ice blue eyes blazing at her through tiny slits. “Surprised to see me alive, Tiny?” she asked. “So, you did betray me,” he spat. “I was never loyal,” she hissed back. Scourge gave a slight nod before a weight slammed into her. Her claws scrapped against the muzzle of a skinny gray she-cat. In the confusion she lost sight of Scourge. “Whiskers,” whispered Moon when she saw her attacker. Now she had Catch to settle with. “When will you learn to die?” Catch snarled. “When I feel like dying.” Both hurled themselves at the other. Moon wrapped her front paws around Catch’s neck while scrapping against her belly with her hind legs. No other cat mattered as they fought with all their strength. But Moon’s was rapidly disappearing. With another blow, Catch knocked her to the ground. Moon tried to push herself back up, but she couldn’t. “You’ve lost Abyss,” Catch sneered. “You should’ve never challenged me for Scourge’s affection.” “Don’t make me ill. Scourge cares for no one. Not even his own kin. He told you to kill me didn’t he?” “You? Kin of the Great Scourge?” “Unfortunately..” Catch paced up and down her side. “Then you are twice the traitor I thought you to be. I’m going to watch you die, Abyss. I’m going to make sure you never come back. I will be the last thing you see in this world.” Moon thought of a retort but held it back. Her eyes instead were focused on a fight. Firestar stood over Scourge, his fangs sinking into his throat. Catch had seen the same thing. “Scourge!” Quickly Moon sank her claws into Catches side. “Where do you think you’re going?” “SCOURGE IS DEAD” Catch whipped around with eyes burning. “I’ll kill you for this!” “I thought you were already going to do that,” she mused. Before Catch attacked again, two more cats launched themselves on top of Catch. “Get out of our forest,” the two young cats yowled. It seemed like every cat in the clearing was trying to get out. Catch vainly tried to call them back into their ranks. But the two apprentices kept slashing at her. Soon she had no choice but to flee with the others. The sounds in the clearing changed from battle cries to cries of victory. As she looked around she saw cats from every clan united in one common cause. This is where they were always meant to be. “You all right?” asked a tortoiseshell she-cat. “Been better,” she replied. “But thank you for taking care of her.” “Our pleasure,” purred a dark brown tabby. For a moment, Moon was taken aback. Even the eyes were the same as Tigerstar’s. “Sorry, sharp pain,” she lied to cover up that she noticed. Looking the exact same as his father must not be easy for him. But there was something else familiar about him that she couldn’t put her paw on. Resting her muzzle on her paws, she tried to even her breathing despite the pain. When she opened her eyes again the two apprentices were still watching her with fur touching. It was like they were afraid if they let go they’d loose each other. Her sight went a little fuzzy. She saw these two cats a little older walking towards the place where the sun set every night. So, these are two of the cats to be chosen. A flame red tom walked between the cats at Four Trees. But there was something off about him. He had no scratch marks anywhere on him. Not even a drop of blood. “Jake?” Her father bent down and rubbed his muzzle against hers. “My brave kit.” Jake looked at her sadly. Was she dying? Moon’s eyes widened in fear, but then anger replaced it. “Oh come on,” she snorted. “I spend most of my life fighting against Scourge and could’ve died any time but now when it’s over I don’t get to see how it turns out?” Another tom walked up to her purring. “For one who walks in and out of StarClan like it’s her own territory I thought that wouldn’t scare you that much.” He touched noses with her. “But you don’t have to worry about joining the stars yet.” “Good,” she said as she sat down grumpily. “Wake now,” said Pinestar. “And take it easy getting back to your territory would you?” chided Jake. “You’ve scared me out of my fur too many times.” “Thank you,” she said to both of them.
Moon limped through the streets dragging Scourge’s body with her. Stopping she tried to remember which fence belonged to Scourge’s mother. Biting down on one of the teeth, Moon slipped his collar over his head. There was no need for his mother to see him like this. Next she removed the dog’s teeth from his claws. As she looked at him she almost though he looked like a helpless kit. But she knew the full terror better than most cats. Still, he was her brother. Just then she noticed a hole in the fence and knew it instantly. Squeezing through she saw an old plump gray she-cat resting on the grass with a pair of kits tussling about. “Quince?” The she-cat lifted up her head with fright. But she held her ground. “Y-yes?” “I mean you and your kits no harm. My name is Moon. I have news about Tiny.” Quince bowed her head. “He’s dead, isn’t he?” Moon nodded. “Yes. I brought his body with me. If you don’t want to see him, I’ll take him with me.” “You are kind. But I will see to it myself. I know what he was, Moon. My punishment will be to bury my own kit.” With a nod, Moon retrieved Scourge from the other side of the fence. “Thank you,” said Quince. It was a dismissal. Moon bowed and went back to the hole in the fence. Before she went through she asked. “His father, what was his name?” “Jake,” Quince said without hesitation. Moon squeezed her eyes shut. So, it was true. They really were half-siblings. With the last trace of doubt gone, she started for home. At long last it was finally over.
